Farming in the 1950s

Join us at Spain’s Field Farm on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th July 2023 and discover the story of upland farming in the North East during the 1950s.

Highlights include:

  • Demonstrations of traditional skills including basket making, dry stone walling, corn dolly making and butter making.
  • Admire a range of tractors and farm vehicles on display.
  • We’ll be joined by Animals About Town petting zoo, and there’ll be the chance to see a number of our own animals too.
  • See sheep shearing demonstrations (weather dependent).
  • Explore our 1950s caravan and get dressed up in 1950s costume (children only).
  • Have a go at milking our wooden cows.
  • Try your hand at making a cork boat and test it to see if it floats.
  • Meet Christine Ruskin, author of ‘The Disappearing Farms of Weardale’ (Saturday only).
  • Learn about and make a posy of flowers with Humble Blooms, 10am-2pm (Saturday only).
  • Enjoy the sound of the Beamish Volunteer Choir performing at 1pm and 2pm (Sunday only).
  • Just down from Spain’s Field at The 1900s Pit Village band hall, listen to the Pegasus Memorial Band, 3-4.30pm (Sunday only).

As with all daytime events, you can use your Unlimited Pass or Friends of Beamish membership to enjoy this special event.
