The Remote Business at Beamish talk offers groups a behind-the-scenes insight into the running of award-winning Beamish Museum. Part of the talk will include a live visit to The 1900s Town to give students the opportunity to ask Beamish Engagers questions.
The talk can be tailored to the needs of your group, topics include:
- Marketing
- Health and safety
- Running of the museum
- Visitor management
- Events
- Hospitality
- Visitor engagement and customer service
- Jobs and structure of the organisation
- Finance and funding
Please note that the supervisor with the students will have an active role to play to support them during this activity.
Students are welcome to ask questions using the chat facility as the Zoom talk progresses. Part of the presentation will include a live visit around The 1900s Town at the museum.

Guidelines for Teachers
Preparing for the Zoom activity: It is strongly recommended that supervising staff should test the connection between the museum and classroom before the session. Contact Simon Woolley, Head of Learning, email simonwoolley@beamish.org.uk, to make arrangements for this (details below). The Beamish presenter only needs to be able to hear the students in order to make the activity work. The chat facility can be used by students to ask questions or to seek clarification.
Practicalities:
- Use of an effective microphone has been beneficial but not essential to the success of the Zoom activity, otherwise students can use the chat facility.
- Information about the museum can be shared before the activity takes place so that students can be aware of some of the topics beforehand and the engagement can be focused on what they really need for their work.
- The presenter can answer any questions the students have and can be directed to visit and chat to people who work in The 1900s Town, asking any questions on behalf of the students.
- There may be localised educational establishment rules that the presenter may not be aware of regarding online activities for the students, it is important that these are discussed beforehand so everybody is clear about how the session will be delivered.
Ideas for pre-visit:
- Prior to the experience, students should be shown some of the data relating to the museum’s business operations, these can include visitor numbers, characteristics of the visitor, visitor expectations, aims and objectives of the museum, patterns of visitation, and so on.
- It is important that the supervising adults take the opportunity to discuss what needs to be covered in the talk beforehand with the Beamish presenter so that the talk can be focused on what the students actually need.
