Attelage Horse Weekend

17th to 18th September

Beamish is hosting a traditional carriage driving competition by the Concours d’International d’Attelage de Tradition (CIAT) on Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th September 2022. This is sure to be a super event with the beautiful backdrop of Beamish Museum.

Attelage de Tradition is a remarkable Carriage Driving event which is actively helping to preserve our heritage. The competition is designed to promote the use of pre-1945 design traditional style carriages, both private and trade, and to reflect the skills and heritage of the driving of harness horses and ponies.

The competition will see entrants participate in three stages. The first stage is a standing presentation judged three times by different judges, this will take place on the Events Field. Entrants will then take part in a road drive (Routier) where horses will be driven around the museum – watch out for them as they pass by!

The final stage will take place in the fields between Pockerley and the welfare hall. Here, competitors will negotiate a number of tasks, the putting away, one handed circle, the drinking glass and the rail before returning to the Events Field.

Visitors will be able to see elements of the competition around the museum across the weekend.

During the Attelage event (17th and 18th September) we will hold a two minute site-wide silence to honour Her Majesty The Queen. Visitors are welcome to join Beamish staff and volunteers in this mark of respect.

The silences will be signalled at 1pm on both days.

As with all daytime events, you can use your Unlimited Pass or Friends of Beamish membership to enjoy this special event.
