Architectural Assistant (Maternity Cover)

Band 3 point 1-8 £17698 - £20,604

Details

Fixed term 9 month contract to cover maternity leave. Band 3 point 1-8 £17698 – £20,604

Beamish has commenced a £17.8 million project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to transform the open air Museum, adding a 1950s town, a Coaching Inn, and a number of 1820s buildings. The design of individual buildings will run in parallel with the construction programme on a rolling programme. For more information about the project, please have a look at our website: http://www.beamish.org.uk/future-plans/

Unusually, we are undertaking the design and build elements of this project in-house so we are seeking to appoint a part qualified Architectural Assistant with a real passion for historic buildings to give us the capacity to achieve an ambitious programme, maintaining quality and accuracy throughout.

Based in the Museum and working closely with our in-house Architects and Design and Buildings teams, you will produce drawings of a range of buildings including – amongst others – an upland farm, Aged Miners’ Homes, a cinema, houses and shops, and an 1820s Coaching Inn and pottery. The buildings represent a range of approaches including translocations, exact replicas of existing buildings, and original designs based on extensive historical research.

Your 2D drawing skills must be excellent, and you will be working on concurrent workstreams to tight deadlines. The majority of the work will be producing 2D Autocad drawings for production and construction but you must have the flexibility to work from a range of sources including historic photographs and plans, and be able to follow clear direction in ensuring materials and details are as accurate as possible, and ensure that these details are communicated clearly in your drawings.

The role, which is offered for 9 months initially to cover maternity leave, would be well suited to an architectural student that holds a minimum of a BA Architectural Design degree or a part I or Part II Architectural qualification that wishes to develop a career within the historic buildings sector and develop an understanding of architectural heritage. As the proposed buildings are to be constructed within the grounds of the open air museum, during the construction phase of the project the role offers un-rivalled opportunities for extensive construction site experience, and seeing your drawings turn into reality. You must therefore be fascinated by the challenge of recreating period buildings, and sensitive to the limits of when we can adapt a building for the purpose of cost-effectiveness or the practicalities of its placement within a thriving open air museum.

The contract is for 37 hours per week for an initial fixed-term of 9 months any extension will be subject to agreement and funding.

Any questions regarding the role can be directed to michellelagar@beamish.org.uk
