Vote for Dorothy!

June 23rd 2017

Voting is open for the Durham Tourism Superstar 2017 Award and our very own Dorothy Carlyon has been shortlisted!

Beamish, Museum, Attraction, North East, Events, England, Great Day Out, Top Ten Places, Family Friendly, Dog Friendly, Victorian, 1940s, World War Two, 1950s, Festival, Transport, Costume, Learning, Tourism, Superstar, Durham, Vote, VisitEngland

Dorothy, who has worked at Beamish for 18 years, is the Town and Pit Life Team Leader and always goes the extra mile to make sure that every visitor has a wonderful experience.

Rhiannon Hiles, Deputy Director of Beamish Museum, said: “Dorothy is a fantastic member of staff and gives our visitors 100% every day, she leads by example with her genuine, infectious smile and laugh, each day placing our visitors at the forefront of everything she does.

“It would mean such a lot to Dorothy, our visitors and the museum if you voted for her, please vote for our fabulous lass!”

From marshalling a parade of giant steam engines trundling through The 1900s Town or reuniting a lost child with their parents, Dorothy carries out every task with a dimpled smile and a cheerful word.

Also shortlisted are Richard Darlington, tour guide and activity leader at Hall Hill Farm in Lanchester, and Caitlin Potts, museum and tours specialist at Durham Castle.

Matthew Henderson, Engagement and Participation Team Assistant at Beamish, was named VisitEngland Tourism Superstar in 2015 after winning the county title in 2014, and Anthony Gales, Head of Operations at the museum, was runner-up in the nationwide public vote in 2013.

Let’s hope Dorothy can continue the North East success in the competition after Lilian Groves, a Durham Cathedral tour guide, was announced Tourism Superstar in 2016, after also winning the Durham award in 2015. Alan Anderson, a volunteer ranger at Auckland Castle, reached the national final last year.

Voting runs until Wednesday, 5th July and the competition organiser, Visit County Durham, will announce the winner at its annual garden party at Crook Hall on Thursday, 13th July.
