Discover over 100 years of history
Set in 350 amazing acres, at Beamish we bring the past to life in a truly unique and immersive way. From the 1820s up to the 1950s, we explore periods of change which saw the birth of the railways, rapid industrialisation, the suffrage movement, world wars, the creation of the NHS, the golden age of cinema and much, much more.
Come along and experience the sights, sounds, smells and even the delicious tastes of the 1820s, early 1900s, 1940s and 1950s.
Meet costumed characters
Our friendly costumed Engagers work across site to bring history to life and answer any questions you may have and to help you enjoy your day. Be sure to say hello on your next visit!
Explore even more exhibits
2024 will see the opening of even more exhibits as the museum, as we get ready to open our 1950s cinema, toy shop and electrical shop and the Drovers Tavern and pottery in our 1820s Landscape as part of our Remaking Beamish project.
The Remaking Beamish project is the biggest development in the museum’s history. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the Remaking Beamish project was awarded £11.8million by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Get around in style
Become a real time traveller by hopping on and off our fleet of period trams and buses! Or if steam’s more your thing, make sure to head to our 1820s Waggonway to learn about the history of the railways, and maybe even take a ride on a steam train! All included in your Beamish Unlimited Pass or Friends of Beamish membership.
Go for a scenic stroll
From stunning Georgian gardens and pit village allotments to relaxing walks in the woods, our 350 acre grounds offer the perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.
Play in the park
Keep the little ones entertained at our Coronation Park and Recreation Ground, which includes a 1950s-style playground with swings, an accessible swing seat, a high slide, a wheelchair accessible roundabout, rocking horse, climbing frame and a rota web climber – a nod to the 1950s witches hat.
If you’re a football fan, make sure to stop by our 1950s football pitch for a quick kickaround. You’ll also be able to learn about amateur football in the 1950s in our football shed.
Or if bowls is more your game, be sure to stop by our 1950s bowling green and pavilion, replicated from John Whitehead Park in Billingham.
Go underground
Grab a hard hat and head underground as our experienced guides give a tour of a real former coal mine.
Feel good in the knowledge that you’re helping to support the museum!
Beamish is a self-reliant charity and 95% of our income comes from our much-valued visitors.
