We will be holding commemorations on Saturday, 15th February ahead of the anniversary of the West Stanley Pit Disaster.
The disaster, caused by underground explosion, occurred on 16th February 1909 and resulted in 168 deaths.
Our commemorations will take place in The 1900s Pit Village chapel at 2pm. The Beamish Choir will sing the hymn Lead Kindly Light, which was the hymn sung by the survivors of the disaster as they waited for rescuers to reach them.
We will be joined by guest speakers, and the Beamish Youth Club will read out the names of the 168 men and boys who were killed.
The event will last for around 40 minutes.
