Horses in Harness 2025

Sat 7th & Sun 8th June 2025

Hold your horses, there’s neigh chance you’ll want to miss this exciting equine event!

In connection with the Railway 200 celebrations taking place throughout the year, our Horses in Harness event will show the types of animals that once serviced the railways through a variety of public, private, trade and commercial vehicles. These animals and vehicles would have once delivered and collected all manner of goods to and from the nation’s railways.

Highlights include:

  • A number of visiting horses and ponies, who will be travelling around the museum both days.
  • After an absence of almost 50 years, we have returning to our region as part of our Horses in Harness event, the Venture Coach! This coach, originally owned by Lewis Priestman of Shotley Bridge, was once a regular sight on the road from his home in Shotley Bridge to Edmundbyers, and ran three days a week through the season from 1922 until the advent of the Second World War.
  • A traditional wheelwright will be giving displays of how to tyre wooden wheels in the Colliery Yard.
  • On Sunday only, the museum welcomes The Highflyer Road coach that once ran on the Great North Road.
  • On Sunday only, there will be a traditional lawn meet of horses and carriages to include local British Driving Society members. Assembling on the Events Field in the afternoon, the exhibitors will then complete a lap of the museum before returning once again to the Events Field for a presentation of rosettes.
