Horses in Harness 2023

10th & 11th June 2023

Stop horsing around and trot along to Horses in Harness at Beamish on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th June!

There’ll be the chance to meet over 30 visiting horses, as well as some of our own, throughout the museum.

Highlights include:

  • The Lord Mayor of Newcastle’s ceremonial coach and team of horses will be making an appearance for the weekend – we’re very grateful to the current owners for letting us exhibit this special coach!
  • An early 1820s Travelling Chariot which will be postilion driven with a team of four horses over the weekend – this is similar to how the carriages were horsed for the King’s coronation.
  • We will be joined by a very rare Whitbread Brewers Dray, which will be exhibited and horsed by Waldburg Shires with a tandem of shire horses.
  • We also have an unusual sporting tandem of carriage horses attending.
  • See a military encampment in The 1900s Pit Village consisting of The Queen’s Bays 2nd Dragoon Guards Living History Group, accompanied by an infantry camp and First World War Farriery demonstration.
  • Visit Marley the pit pony in our 1900s Pit Village.
  • See horse long-reining demonstrations taking place at The 1940s Farm.
  • Enjoy donkey rides on the Events Field on Sunday (children only).
