Our next Home Educators’ Day takes place on Friday, 6th February 2026. There will be a range of bookable workshops and drop-in activities for you to try during your visit.

Bookable Workshops 

Workshops are individually priced, accompanying adult admitted to workshop free of charge. Museum admission fee applies. Parental supervision is required throughout the activities.

Once Upon a Puppet

Watch a magical traditional puppet show at Pockerley, before taking part in a range of activities linked to traditional tales in a historical setting. You will watch a short traditional puppet show, led by Beamish staff at the beginning of this activity. Once complete, you will rotate round a number of activities in the main house, including making porridge, turning the spinning wheel and writing with a quill pen.

This activity will take place at Pockerley in the Georgian Landscape at 10.30am, 12pm and 2pm and will be approximately 60 minutes long. £2.50 per person per session, pre-booking essential. Suitable for up to aged 11 years. Please note: Adults must book places on this workshop due to space restrictions.

Exclusive Pantomime performance: Dick Whittington and his Cat

Join us for an exclusive Home Educators performance of the Beamish pantomime; Dick Whittington and his Cat in our 1950s Welfare Hall. Tickets are only available to Home Educating families for this performance.

This activity will take place at the 1950s Welfare at 1.30pm and will be approximately 50 minutes long. £3 per child, £6 per adult, pre-booking essential. Suitable for all ages.

The Big Sing

Join local musician Bill Elliott for a group sing along in our Pit Village Band Hall. Using local folk songs, the session will encourage everyone to join in and sing along.

This activity will take place at the Band Hall in the 1900s Pit Village at 10.30am, 11.30am, and 1pm. It will last approximately 40 minutes and will be £1.50 per child per session, pre-booking essential. Suitable for all ages.

Free drop-in activities

Take part in a number of free activities around the museum (museum admission fee applies).

At times, exhibits may be busy with families participating, so you may wish to pop by again at a different time if it is too busy for you, or speak with a member of staff who can try to accommodate any needs you may have.

  • Costume try on in the Masonic Hall in the 1900s Town. Come and try on Edwardian costume and see what fashion was like in the 1900s.
  • Finger Puppet making in the kitchen at Home Farm.
  • Professor Pepper’s Illusions in the Reece Workshop in the 1950s Town

Don’t forget

The Lamp Cabin in The 1900s Pit Village, and the Bowling Pavilion in The 1950s Town will be available as indoor lunch spaces from 11.30am-1.30pm.
