Remaking Beamish Architectural Assistant

£16,500 - £24,750 (37 hours per week, 36 months fixed term)

Details

Beamish is undertaking a £17.8 million project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to transform the open air Museum, adding a 1950s town, a Coaching Inn, and a number of 1820s buildings. For more information about the project, please have a look at our website: http://www.beamish.org.uk/future-plans/

Unusually, we are undertaking the design and build elements of this project in-house so we are seeking to appoint a part qualified (part I or II) Architectural Assistant with a real passion for historic buildings to give us the capacity to achieve an ambitious programme, maintaining quality and accuracy throughout.

Based in the Museum and working closely with the in-house Conservation Architect and the Design and Buildings team, you will produce drawings of a range of buildings including – amongst others – an upland farm, Aged Miners’ Homes, a cinema, houses and shops, and an 1820s Coaching Inn and pottery. The buildings represent a range of approaches including translocations, exact replicas of existing buildings, and original designs based on extensive historical research.

Your drawing skills must be excellent, and you will be working on concurrent workstreams to tight deadlines. Although the majority of the work will be producing 2D Autocad drawings for production and construction, skills in producing 3D visualisations of buildings would be an asset. You must have the flexibility to work from a range of sources including historic photographs and plans, and be able to follow clear direction in ensuring materials and details are as accurate as possible, and ensure that these details are communicated clearly in your drawings. The role would be well suited to an architectural student that wishes to develop a career within the historic buildings sector and working within a wider team of Conservation Architect, Architectural Historians, Archaeologists and Curatorial Staff. The role will offer an excellent opportunity to develop an understanding of architectural heritage and the acquisition of traditional building construction and detailing skills. As the proposed buildings are to be constructed within the grounds of the open air museum, during the construction phase of the project the role offers un-rivalled opportunities for extensive construction site experience, and seeing your drawings turn into reality. You must therefore be fascinated by the challenge of recreating period buildings, and sensitive to the limits of when we can adapt a building for the purpose of cost-effectiveness or the practicalities of its placement within a thriving open air museum.

The construction project is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. The contract is for 37 hours per week for an initial fixed-term of 12 months with scope to extend as the project develops. Any questions regarding the role can be directed to michellelagar@beamish.org.uk.

You are invited to include examples of your work with Auto CAD and technical detailing drawings with your completed application. Files/PDFs sent electronically should be limited to no greater than 3 MB in size. We would be happy to receive larger documents by post. Please ensure all supporting files are clearly marked with your full name and the post title ‘Architectural Assistant’

The deadline for applications is 12pm on Monday 23rd January 2017. We are sorry but we are only able to contact shortlisted candidates.
