Beamish has ambitious plans for the future – and is planning for a decade of exciting new developments. This is your chance to join us and help us on this journey, ensuring our Museum continues to develop and grow.
Beamish Museum is seeking a highly motivated candidate to assist the Head of Transport & Industry in leading the operations based Transport team at the award winning Co Durham Museum. This World-Class attraction, with over 500,000 visitors per annum, operates two passenger carrying railways, a passenger carrying electric tramway, vintage bus routes, an Edwardian colliery railway and a growing narrow gauge railway. The role is that of leading a large team of staff and volunteers who engage with the visitors and carry out the safety critical operations associated with this diverse array of transport in a safe and engaging manner. The post involves the management and coordination of this team, upholding the Museum’s primary objective to ‘put the visitor first’ and ensure the safety of all visitors and personnel. Within the team is a maintenance staff dedicated to the upkeep of steam locomotives, trams and buses.
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of, and proven ability for, the operation and development of safety critical systems under the Museum’s Safety Management System. They will have a track record in managing and motivating staff in such operations and a good practical and theoretical engineering knowledge to support the regular maintenance of the working transport collection at Beamish, through the transport maintenance team. A key role is that of ensuring that all staff and volunteers fulfil the requirements for competence, as defined in the Museum’s SMS and which is verified using external assessors for both rail, tramway and bus operations.
The applicant will be responsible to the Head of Transport & Industry and will assist with the development of new transport operations at the Museum and the introduction of new locomotives and rolling stock across all of the operating railways and tramway. The Museum holds a number of special transport events throughout the year and the successful applicant will be able to show both an ability to support the existing programme (including operation of visiting locomotives and rolling stock, liaison with haulage contractors and integration of visiting crew members) and an ambition to develop these events further.
