Short Courses

We offer people a fantastic opportunity to experience the Museum in a completely different way whilst having fun and learning new skills, and the courses have proved extremely popular so far. Click on the courses below to find out more information.

£120 per person (loan of protective suit £5 extra)
Learn everything you need to know about beekeeping with this hands-on course which will set you on your way to keeping your own.
£55 per person (lunch included)
Take the opportunity to make and decorate a platter or dish using traditional hump moulds and to decorate a pre-prepared slipware commemorative plate.
£175 per person (lunch included)
Join champion ploughman Jim Elliot for a day of toil and learn the basics of ploughing a field with heavy horses. Suitable for beginners.

£60 (includes lunch)
Learn the basics of dry stone walling. Choosing the right stone is not always as easy as you think! Suitable for absolute beginners

Learn the basics of beekeeping with this hands-on course which will set you on your way to keeping your own.

Be inspired by Beamish Museum's collection of original and unique proggy mats! Make your own proggy mat and take it home, along with your own mat making kit.

Our experienced Tram driving team will give you a full day's worth of tramway preparation, safety checks, and of course, driving the trams through our authentic settings.

Find out all about the pioneering railway engines at the Waggonway and learn how to clean, bring into steam and drive them.

Beamish is the perfect location for festive photography. Learn how to get the best out of your DSLR in a traditional setting with David Taylor.

Try your hand at this traditional printmaking technique - design, carve and hand-print your own work, then take home your own artwork and block print.

Learn the black art of printing in our Edwardian Print Shop with our hands on course, led by a man with many years of printing experience.

Experience the earliest steam railways first hand and have a go at driving one of our early 1800s replica steam engines, Puffing Billy or the Steam Elephant.

Bake favourites such as stottie cakes, singing hinnies, shortbread and cheese scones on a traditional coal fired range in a cosy period kitchen, before taking them home to enjoy.

Learn how to groom and prepare a horse for a show with one of our expert horsemen at the Beamish stables.

A fantastic opportunity to learn from our experienced stables team and discover the basics of how to drive horses.

£45 per person
Eggs the old fashioned way! Learn about animal husbandry and different breeds of chickens, geese and ducks.

Please note: courses are currently only available for those aged 18 and over, tram driver experiences are limited to those aged 21 and over.

Please note that due to circumstances beyond our control, the Museum reserves the right to change or alter course dates at any time. Should this situation arise, the customer will be offered a full refund or an option to attend a different course where possible.
