Short Courses 2012

Fancy trying your hand at a new skill in 2012? Here at Beamish we’re passionate about keeping traditional crafts and skills alive, and we want to share them with you!

Ever wanted to have a go at baking some delicious scones on our coal-fired ranges here at Beamish? Well now you can have a go with our Beamish Baking Days on 1st, 15th or 29th February!

Our Victorian Christmas cooking course proved to be very popular:

"My sister and I were at Beamish on Saturday and did the course on traditional Victorian Christmas cooking. We had the best day ever!! Everyone was so kind. It was an experience we will never forget.” Pam via Facebook.

Bake in our authentic ranges, and learn how to cook without the help of a thermostat, and soak up the atmosphere in a kitchen Mrs Beeton would have felt at home in.

Proggy Mats have been a part of North East homes for over a century, and many folks can remember sitting by the fire helping their Grandma cut up strips of material to make a cosy mat. With our Proggy Mat workshops on 12th May, 22nd July and 9th September, our mat making expert staff members will teach you how to plan and create your very own proggy mat to take home.

One lady who had a go in 2011 said: "Enjoyed that it was a one day course. Lovely talking to everyone. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Had a great day and great to take the material home. Wonderful course thanks so much!"

Relive the glory days of steam and have a go at driving one of our replica steam locomotives at Pockerley Waggonway. There’s nothing quite like the smell of steam and the heat of the boiler as you learn how to drive Puffing Billy or Steam Elephant.

The North East played a vital role in the development of the steam engine, and our replicas give you a real taste of North East history.

One gentleman who has already had a go said:

“It was an amazing experience and the guys (tutors) were brilliant and informative. A great talking point and I will recommend it.”

There are lots of opportunities to have a go at driving a steam engine in 2012, including 19th May, 30th May and 16th June.

It takes hours of preparation to get horses looking their best for shows, and our expert horseman can show you how to produce a winner! During Prepare a Heavy Horse for a Show our stables team will give you step by step tutoring and show your how to groom and plait the horse, and harness the horse ready for a show.

No experience is necessary for this course, and you can get hands on with our Beamish horses on 27th May or 1st July.
