This February Half Term join in and be a part of our activities as we remember the Silksworth Colliery strike and evictions. Every day from Saturday, 11th to Sunday, 19th February The Town, Pit Village, Colliery Yard and Tramway will be recreating the atmosphere of the evictions in a colliery community, and remembering the miners who were evicted from their homes by Lord Londonderry. PLEASE NOTE: The Museum is open EVERY DAY from 10:00am-4:00pm Saturday, 11th to Sunday, 19th February 2012, (including Monday, 13th and Friday, 17th February) for this event. During this period we are extending our WINTER DISCOUNTED DAY ADMISSION to the whole of the half term week, (Adult £8, Child £5, Student/Senior £6.50). Unlimited Passes will still be available to purchase. What’s Happening? The Pit Village and Colliery Yard: Join in and show your support for the striking miners and the families as they're evicted from the Pit Cottages by the ‘Candymen’, and the supportive neighbours cooking hearty food to feed their friends. The Methodist Chapel will become a shelter for some evicted families, recreating the struggles of the homeless strikers. See the Silksworth Miners' Banner, kindly brought in by the Silksworth Banner Group. Make a blue rosette in the Colliery Lamp Cabin to show your support for the strikers and evictees, then head down the mine to experience what life was like as a miner. The Town: The townsfolk will be showing their support for the striking miners. The residents of Ravensworth Terrace will be baking goods to feed the evicted families, while the Printer will be producing flyers and posters to spread the word! A special exhibition in the Bank Board Room by the Silksworth Heritage Group and the Silksworth Mining Society will show the mining heritage of Silksworth. It will include photographs and stories of the 1890 evictions, the history of Silksworth and members of the groups will be here to talk to visitors and share their passion for Silksworth. The Tramway: Our friendly fleet of trams and buses will be running throughout the event. Enjoy a warming cuppa in the Dainty Dinah Tea Rooms in the Town, a bite to eat in the Pitman’s Pantry or delicious fish and chips in Davy’s Fried Fish and Chip Shop in the Pit Village. PLEASE NOTE: Pockerley Old Hall and Home Farm will be CLOSED throughout this period. Beamish has been working with community groups and schools from the Silksworth area as part of a Heritage Lottery funded project to support community heritage. The English variant of the game in split into three versions, these are The Northern Game, The Long Game and The East Anglian Game.
