Join us in The Pit Village on 30th April and 1st May for a host of May Day activities! Did you know that May Day was one of the biggest annual celebrations in Edwardian times?
The May Day King and Queen will be crowned, plus there will be music, Maypole dancing and crafts.
Visitors can have a go at traditional Maypole dancing throughout the day in The Pit Village, with musical accompaniment Benny Graham from The Pitmen Poets!
The important crowning of the May King and Queen will take place at 2:30pm each day, can your little one claim the coveted title? This will be followed by a Swedish masquerade dance and entertainment throughout the day.
On Sunday, 30th April, High Spen Blue Diamonds, a group of rapper dancers, will put on a fantastic show at 11:30am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm and 3:30pm.
High Spen Pink Diamonds will perform at 11:30am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm and 3:30pm on Monday, 1st May.
Visitors can also make a May Day mask in The Pit Village school, the more creative the better! Plus we need your help to make our Jack in the Green on the special Pit Village cart, using traditional greenery.
On Monday, 1st May, Axum Folk Band will perform at 1pm-1:30pm & 2:45pm-3:30pm, and The Caedmon Choir will be performing at the museum at 1pm & 2pm.
There’ll also be the chance to learn about traditional May Day activities up at Pockerley Old Hall. Plenty to get involved with!
