Beamish Collects Sandford Award

On Tuesday 29th November, members of the Beamish Museum Learning and Access team attended the Sandford Awards prizegiving. The prestigious ceremony was held in Durham Cathedral and presented by Professor Dame Rosemary Cramp DBE.

The Beamish team were presented the Sandford Award along with other high profile venues from across the UK who are rewarded for doing excellent work in Heritage Education, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry.

Winners were judged for good practice and high quality formal, curriculum-linked education provision.

Lead Judge, Sue Mitchell said:

'Beamish is a wonderful ‘living and working’ open air museum, which gives pupils an interactive insight into what life was like in the North East of England during the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras.

The popular schools programme offers a wide range of opportunities for active, creative, interdisciplinary learning developed and delivered by professional staff who will inspire and motivate pupils of all ages.'

The award is valid for five years and our previous Sandford Award was achieved in 2006. Congratulations to fellow local Sandford Award winners Durham Cathedral.
