welcome

The Beamish Development Trust (registered charity no 517147) supports the work of the Museum by encouraging donations from individuals, companies and charitable trusts.

Unlike most major museums, Beamish receives no Government funding for running costs – 95% are met from admission charges and 5% from the local authorities who administer the Museum. Capital projects such as new historic attractions and visitor services, must be funded by grants and gifts.

A huge range of historic displays have been partially funded by the Development Trust, including the Colliery Chapel and School, the Garage and Bank in the Town Street and the restoration of Pockerley Farmhouse and the Steam Elephant locomotive in the 1820s area. Money raised can be used as matched funding to lever grants from public bodies, including the European Regional Development Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Trust also raises funds to help children in deprived areas and people of all ages with mobility problems to visit Beamish.

If you care about your heritage, and want to make sure that the lives of your grandparents and great-grandparents are not forgotten, please consider a gift to the Beamish Development Trust.

How you can help

  • Making a donation – please make cheques payable to Beamish Development Trust and send to: Anne Burton, Beamish Development Trust, Freepost NEA16196, Beamish, Stanley, DH9 0BR.
  • If you are a UK taxpayer we can reclaim the tax on your gift, making it worth even more – please tell us if you wish us to do this. We will need your full name and address.

Or click here to make a credit card donation online

  • Leaving a legacy – please ring 0191 370 4021 for a copy of our legacy leaflet. Bequests or in memoriam gifts can be dedicated to particular areas of the Museum if desired, and can be a permanent memorial to a benefactor or loved one. (please note – if you are considering donating material objects, such as items of furniture or a house, please telephone the Museum on 0191 370 4000 to discuss your gift first as, sadly, not everything can be accepted.)
  • Volunteering – please visit the Friends of Beamish website for more information on volunteering at Beamish.
  • Corporate membership – our Business@Beamish scheme gives opportunities for local companies to support Beamish and make the most of its facilities at the same time. Benefits of membership include discounted rates on hiring venues for events, 30 free Beamish Club memberships for staff, use of the events field for a Company Family Day, and more. Founder members include MetroCentre, Northumbrian Water, Newcastle Chronicle & Journal, Darlington Building Society, University of Northumbria and The Go-Ahead Group plc.  Ring Anne Burton, Beamish Development Trust, on 0191 370 4021 for details.
  • Sponsorship – all of the Beamish events and many areas of the Museum’s work are available for sponsorship by companies. Please contact Anne Burton, Beamish Development Trust, on 0191 370 4021 for a list of current opportunities.
