The Beamish Tram Challenge 2010

Thank you to everyone who took part in the 2010 Beamish Tram Challenge on Sunday 27th June. It was a fantastic event and we hope you all enjoyed taking part.

More than 80 people, including a pirate and an Edwardian lady, took part in racing Sunderland Tram 16 around the tramway circuit for the Fun Run. 29 runners managed to beat the tram, with Benjamin Hetherington at the head of the pack. Benjamin not only won ‘First to Beat the Beamish Tram’ but he also picked up the ‘First Junior Male’ prize as well. ‘First Junior Female’ was won by Rebecca Stobbart and the ‘First Team to Cross the Finishing Line’ was the Sedgefield Harriers.

The rising temperatures didn’t deter the 130+ runners who took part in the 10k Multi-Terrain Race. As with the Fun Run the 10k race started in the Town, with a lap of the circuit against the tram before runners ventured off into the woodland which surrounds the Museum.

Nick Swinburne for Morpeth Harriers was the first person to beat the Beamish Tram and he continued his lead to win the race in 35.24. Following on was Patrick Duffy from Crook and District Athletic Club in 37.11 and third place was taken by Steven Duffy of Sunderland Harriers in 37.31.

Ladies winner Fran Little came in first with a time of 44.59, ahead of Sue Ramage in second and Lucy Partridge in third.

Whilst we are still totalling up the final amount raised for Beamish Development Trust, the 2010 Beamish Tram Challenge looks set to have raised over £2000. This money will allow disadvantaged children and young people from around the region to visit Beamish Museum.
